Re: Proposed Dunbar Resort in the Black Hills of South Dakota
Yesterday, April 11th 2002, we received a message from Paula Horne and Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe.
Kevin Costner visited Arvol last year and said he was deeply concerned of the attacks he had received about his plans, explaining that it was not only a resort, but also a tour educating the visitors to his land about the history of the Lakota people. At that time, Mr. Looking Horse told him that he could not support this type of endeavor, as he knew the Lakota People were concerned of this venture, as they thought he was their friend and they are voicing their concern to someone that they thought they could trust in respect to the Sacred Black Hills. Since then, Mr. Looking Horse and Kevin Costner established a communication and Arvol learned that Kevin since then stopped the idea he had and is proceeding to look at other ways to continue his concern for educating people of the importance of the Lakota People and the preservation of their culture.
Finally, after 11 years of campaigning, it now seems that Kevin has listened to the People, he has responding to all the prayers and is concerned for this controversy. So let us support this new change of heart and see where he will go with this property and pray for him that good ideas and messages will come about in concern for this Sacred Site. We would hate for him to sell it to someone else and they continue with the resort anyway!
Arvol Looking Horse took a walk with him on the property and he has seen the clean-up Costner made from the Homestake Mining Company damage, which was extensive and the old trash pit dump site that was once there.
These are positive steps toward his concern. Costner continues to rethink the situation, which he states will involve the preservation and education of Lakota history and culture.
We have added an update to our Dunbar/Costner webpages and, for the time being, we have removed the online petition.

But... we will keep our Argus eyes on the Costner brothers...
To all of you who ever signed our online or paper petitions, or voiced your concern to Kevin Costner: THANK YOU!!!
Eleven years of campaigning have finally resulted in something positive. :-)
